Then they’re doing what everyone around him is doing. They look at him but they don’t see him. And they hear what he says, but they don’t listen to him. Honestly after watching IM and IM2 there are certain scenes with certain people where I think, ‘the fuck, Tony. why do you put up with their shit?’

I know we all have dumb tony feelings but seriously this is not a case of Tony Stark having bad friends. tony stark has the best friends in the world okay, who put up with all kinds of shit, but they are not mind readers. 

tony purposefully obfuscates his true feelings because that’s what tony does. he doesn’t like to ask for help, even when it’s the smart thing to do—-fandom seems to have his penchant for self-sacrifice/self-destruction pegged down, but seems to have a harder time of grasping the fact that trying to push away your friends sometimes results in pushing away your friends.

like this scene for example. it doesn’t show Rhodey in the best light, but we only see Tony’s betrayed expression from an audience POV. meanwhile Rhodey only sees a friend who seems to be suffering from PTSD and shouldn’t be encouraged to make rash decisions—he doesn’t know about the cave, or Yinsen, or the arc reactor in his chest, because Tony hides it from the people he cares about. but don’t say Rhodey’s a bad friend, because he just spent 3 months in the desert looking for Tony when everyone else thought he was dead. later on he’ll spend most of IM2 risking his job so Tony could get to keep the suit. (same with Pepper and the whole ‘she doesn’t notice Tony’s dying’ thing.)
