“Sworn virgins” (burrneshas in Albanian) are Albanian women who decide to ignore their female identity and live as men in the Balkans. Photographer Jill Peters traveled to Northern Albania to meet and photograph these women. The decision to live as men is more related to gender roles in the Albanian culture rather than a statement of sexuality; these women live their lives appearing as men.

Sworn virgins have existed for centuries. According to tradition dating back to the 15th century developed out of the Kanun, a tribal code of law, tribal clans from the Balkans considered families without a male presence as pariahs. When blood feuds decimated all the men in a family, the only way to salvage their honor was for a woman to become the patriarch of the clan and start acting like a man.

“Becoming a sworn virgin or burrnesha elevated a woman to the status of a man and granted her all the rights and privileges of the male population,” Peters writes on her website. “In order to manifest the transition, such a woman cut her hair, donned male clothing and sometimes even changed her name. … Most importantly of all, she took a celibacy vow to remain chaste for life.”

Despite the fact that the sworn virgins never marry or have children, “None of them had regrets,” Peters said of the women she spoke to. “They’re very proud of their families, of their nephews and nieces.” And as long as they live an honorable life, they’re respected and treated as important members of society.

After taking quite a bit of heat for the tweet below, I’ve decided to formulate my response here, for those who care to take the time to read it outside of 160 characters.

This morning I read the details of the horrific gang rape of a 16 year old girl in Northern California, and was moved to…

Oh gosh. Part of me says don’t put my thoughts on there. The other part says if I don’t I’ll just be frustrated at reading others and not my own. And this is the type of thing that will be talked about a lot. So let me just say what I think are two very important clarifications. (And oh do I hope that Ian reads the comments to his post and sorts through the yelling to see where the real issue lies).

1) From what I read, it seems very clear that Ian believes the problem fans had with his tweet was with the term “lady” and that there’s a misguided idea that “ladies” must be ultra-feminine & Victorian in manner. So he writes a very nicely detailed post on what he believes a lady to be.

The actual problem people have with the tweet is that the phrasing gives an impression of victim blaming and perpetuating rape culture.

And I get that. As a woman and a victim, do I ever get that. But I ask y’all to consider something. Ian says that he thought his tweet should have a commentary on both sexes. It’s a nice thought, but misguided in this case. I don’t believe he was in any way trying to say that if this 16 year old had acted more like a “lady” that she wouldn’t have been raped or that it was in any way her fault. Obviously I don’t know Ian personally but the way his female costars talk about him and the impressions he gives off don’t indicate to me that he’s intentionally trying to blame this girl. (or any girl). Because of the context of the tweet, it can give the impression of victim-blaming/slut-shaming. But that’s clearly not what Ian meant. Hell, just the fact that he spent however long writing a post to explain himself when that wasn’t even the problem makes that pretty clear.

So what we’re saying is the problem is one thing. What Ian thinks the problem is, is another.

2) Alright then, we’ve figured out that we’re on two different pages here. I briefly state my thoughts below on Ian’s actual intent behind the tumblr post. The other thing I want to suggest is that we take this as an opportunity.

Let’s say Ian does read some of the posts and comments and realizes where the actual issue was with his tweet. If those responses are nothing but attacks against him, there’s very little likelihood that he’ll listen to any of it. But if we take the time to explain the problem, to point out that while the idea of not being sexist is nice, comments like that—no matter how inadvertent—perpetuate the rape culture problem. We can explain that even if it might be true that a woman shouldn’t have to feel bad about being called a lady, that the admonitions are dangerous in our current culture. We can inform that commentary like that gives the wrong impression and makes it seem like the blame is with the victim.

By doing this in a kind and calm manner, we have a much greater chance of influencing Ian’s (or anyone else’s) opinion for the better.

3) Ian’s opinion on the definition of a “lady” is a decent one from my pov. Not perfect, and I think a lot of us in the Teen Wolf fandom recognize that because we’re more aware of the more and more outdated ideas of gender normative behavior. But what Ian views a “lady” to be isn’t a bad thing at all. In fact, it’s a pretty empowered one compared to a lot of other opinions out there.

I think if you read through Ian’s post for what he’s trying to say without reading it through the lens that insists he’s victim-blaming/slut-shaming, you’ll have better perspective. And that will allow us to have dialogue and to teach people better and more encouraging ways to communicate.

Yes, for the most part. And to answer your question about the “Lady” bit, Mr. Bohen, it is the fact that ‘ladies’ as you so gentlee put it were not equals. They were property, they were useless unless ‘pure’ according to a man, and if at any time they said they had been wronged they needed a male account or witness to back them up, which since the usual witness to the ‘crime’ committed was the rapist or attacker was not likely. And then they were blamed for it, cast aside as no longer the pure and innocent (read, doll-like and idealized, perhaps even fetishized) and either quietly married off (oh look, the power of the penis will restore what another penis took away!) or cast into sanatoriums.

Ladies, at the time when the title was used in ‘equality’ to Lord, were likely not allowed to own land, property, vote, or do essentially anything without the approval of their nearest male relative. Ladies were expected to sit down, shut up, lie back and think of England and told that they. Did. Not. Matter.

Ladies are supposed to be polite. You advocate us being the ‘bigger man’ (oh, look, we’re back to the penis being the center of all importance again) when someone missteps. That is great advice…for the first thousand times it happens. And believe me, by the time I was 13, it had already happened that much. After that, even during that time, you get worried. ‘What it they’re right?’ you wonder to yourself, during school, during sports, at home, in bed, worried about how you might have tempted a man into brutalizing you. ‘What if that shirt was too low? What if my bra strap showing is too distracting for the boys in class? What if it’s my fault?’

And that Mr. Bohen, is what rape-culture is all about. Boys will be boys. Boys will punch and pull to show affection on the playground, and men will drug and/or drag women off and bind them unwillingly and make them feel like if they tell anyone, anyone about what they’ve lived through, then everyone will tell them that. They. Are. To. Blame. And even one person, one person, who might not even matter to the survivor all that much, asking them oh-so-gently-oh-so-condescendingly (rather like your reply, Mr. Bohen) if they did anything to provoke him or them. Did you meet his eyes? Did you challenge him or back talk or flirt with him or another guy? Did you tell him yes? Did he buy you a drink and you accepted it? You answer any of these with an affirmative and people will ask again. ARE YOU SURE? They have decided the answer already, no judge, no jury, only them and their surety, so like anyone put under torture, eventually you will give them the answer they want: yes, i did it. it was my fault.

And if you say no to any of the above, then they will say, ‘well you must have done something to set him off’. So therein lies the rub, sir, for no matter what you tell them, no matter what you tell everyone (even yourself) they will always tell you no. They will say ‘say no to drinks to avoid rape drugs’ but in the same breath ‘accept a drink or phone number so that he doesn’t get mad’ while also saying ‘don’t let yourself owe him anything, don’t take his money or his gifts or his drinks or accept his number and not call.’ We are told, with every breath, Mr. Bohen, that we are at fault, that we are capable of preventing rape or assault, and when it most likely inevitable occurs (every 2 minutes, someone in the USA is raped, and that is a calculation using reported rapes, and over half of all rapes are never reported—obviously an estimate since we are told, as our lady ancestors were, to sit down and shut up) we are the ones who let it happen.

Your later definition of a lady, as you can see, does not match up with what we have been told, over and over again, is what a lady should be like. Just today, I saw two children in the pool locker room where I work as a lifeguard. Both were stuffing their faces with food and generally making a mess. The mom began almost-yelling “That’s not very lady-like! Why are you stuffing your face like a pig? Do you see how rude you look?!” to the girl. To the boy, she made no comment. Again, we arrive at the hypocrisy of our culture. And all centered on a term that you (and I) would have serve as a term of respect, though it is likely impossible with the history (his-story, HA) behind it. As you play a character on Teen Wolf who uses words to cut sharper than a werewolf’s claws and language that paralyzes like the kanima’s venom, you can certainly understand how we got a little angered.

You can see, then, how your definition of ‘lady’ does not appeal to us. We do not have to pander to your delicate sensibilities. We do not have time to be silenced. If we let ourselves be silenced or are forced into silenced, then we are caged, when it is the people who assaulted us who should be behind bars.

This leads to my final point (which, in the doubtful case you decided to read my little comment, would not doubt cause a sigh of relief that I will be shutting up soon—oh look wave to hypocrisy!) that women and men are not always fundamentally different and us being “equal in ability (for the most part)” has nothing to do with it. Some people do not fall into your nice little box of male or female. Some people do not have a set gender. Some people alternate between genders, or sometimes feel they do not fit into the bi-gender categories at all. Some people switch sex. Gender and sex are not the same. I am not the best person to talk about this to you, but I will try.

If the sexes were truly separate, as you so claim, then you or I would likely not be here. Yes, that was an intercourse joke. Also, sports metaphors for sexual intercourse are not the best idea when you consider that sports have basically been equated to antiquated warfare, with star athletes (mostly male) gaining fame, fortune, and women as their prize for their physical prowess. You are not proving your point about the ideal of gentlemen. We don’t have to be the same, you’re right about that. But inevitably, we are treated as lesser because of that smarmy little phrase I previously quoted. You might have been comparing sexual prowess, I don’t know, it’s 1:30 AM, and if you think a penis and you knowing how to use it validates your point then you are so far gone down the crazy-hole that even asking for directions would not get you to the right spot (yes that was an intercourse joke as well). We are treated as non-equals, and for a long time were considered non-entities (I would like to clarify that when I am talking about sexist BS in the past I am talking about most of the Caucasian European countries and their upper classes in their colonies at the time when ‘lady’ was a term for a lord’s wife).Yes, you read that right. We were considered to be as about as intelligent as a cat, and just about our only purpose was to manage the house (or appoint someone to manage the house and funds if we could not manage the task since, surprise! math was not commonly taught to women except in the form of household spending and taxes) and pop out legitimate children, while the lord could do whatever and whoever he wanted.

So now maybe you see what the fuss is about. We are angry because we have been putting up with this for years and years and years, and because despite our celebration (very much less than say, the male WASP President’s birthdays/Presidents Day) of the 19th Amendment’s ratification recently, we are still treated like we do. Not. Matter. Oh yeah, do you remember that part where we had to apply to be able to vote? To have a say in the country that we helped free under the banner of “Liberty and Justice for all”? There’s a word missing there: equality. Maybe you should look that up.

Also, checking Wikipedia for a definition is not the best idea when dealing with anything, but especially not when dealing with anything non-androcentric, non-white, non-classist, non-cissist, or non-heteronormative. Just sayin’.

okay so my brother uses Old Spice Pure Sport Deodorant, so about 5 days ago I had seen The Great Gatsby that weekend and was when I saw the “Pure Sport” part I couldn’t help myself so I crossed out the Pure part and wrote OLD. so it read Old Sport.

last night I noticed he hadn’t confronted me about it, so I kinda went crazy.

There’s a picture of a sailboat on the front, so obviously i wrote I”M ON A BOAT in an arc over that.

on the back cap it originally said “The Scent of VICTORY”. I replaced it with “The Scent of MONEY”.

On the back it has this thing that starts off “For the man who knows that..” so I wrote over the rest of the bit “YOU CAN REPEAT THE PAST”.

about 20 minutes after I do this my brother and I are both screaming with laughter and our parents are completely done with us.

It’s good to be a nerd.
